Lucien’s Story – Lucien and Jalaine Poirier

Hi! My name is Lucien Poirier, and I believe in miracles! Without a doubt, I am a walking, talking miracle in the flesh. My mere existence is proof that an amazing quality of life is possible after even the most aggressive cancers invade your body. Please allow me to share a bit of my story as inspiration for you or someone you love who is battling cancer or any number of dreadful maladies.

One of the most troublesome issues for me was eating. Digestive disorders are some of the most problematic for a body, because nutrition and hydration are critical for any positive quality of life. I initially suffered from acid indigestion which progressed to Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and Barrett’s Esophagus, which is a precancerous condition. All of this was complicated by H pylori bacteria that were destroying my stomach lining, causing multiple ulcers and inflammation of my esophagus.

Prescription medications were the primary option my doctors chose to treat my digestive disorders, but the side effects were fierce. An endoscopy with biopsies revealed I had adenocarcinoma, or esophageal cancer. I sought a second opinion at Moffitt Cancer Center, and the PET scan confirmed the initial diagnosis and indicated the cancer had spread to my right lung, the lymph nodes behind my stomach, my liver and believe it or not, my left hip.

The prognosis was not good. I was told I had a 3% chance of survival, and I was encouraged by my doctors to get my affairs in order. I had only about six months to live, and palliative care by an oncologist was the only thing they could provide to make me more comfortable as my life slipped away.

That was in 2004. I endured chemotherapy and radiation until my body could tolerate surgery to remove the esophageal cancer. That required a resection of the esophagus and a restructuring of my stomach to accommodate food. This didn’t work out so well, as it resulted in a “dumping syndrome,” because my stomach was only 1/3 of its original size, and it was incapable of processing foods as it should. This caused “dumping’ to my intestines which presented with a host of new problems, like reactive hypoglycemia which caused my blood sugar levels to drop; and I became lactose intolerant.

This was my daily dietary nightmare as I tried to figure out how to eat again and consume the recommended allowance of fruit and vegetables each day. The nightmare continued until my wife Jalaine, also a cancer survivor, introduced me to Juice Plus and tower gardens in 2017.
